A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: We come here before we had our assessments and practiced the climb that we had to do, so we top roped Racing In The Streets twice to get the feel for it and find places for gear and then we lead the climb in two pitches to make sure we could do it. After we set up a top rope on Sparrow Fart to climb on and we also practiced our rescues that we needed to do for the assessment - escaping the system & assisted hoist.

A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: The students were completing some rock climbing unit standards for the two days so we had to teach them about climbing, abseiling and belaying. The two days went really well and the students payed really good attention when we were teaching and they all did really good climbing, abseiling and belaying.

A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: The students were completing some rock climbing unit standards for the two days so we had to teach them about climbing, abseiling and belaying. The two days went well and it was really good to get out to Charleston on the first day so the students could do their abseiling outside on real rock. The students lacked a bit of modivation but they still payed attention and it was cool to see improvements in some of the students over the days.

A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: Another good day out, we stopped along the coast road at boulders and we did some bouldering  to work on our strength and technique. We went up to Punikaiki and went to the Air Traffic Control Tower wall and the Knee Cow Wall, where we both lead the 17 Honour Among Thieves. We walked up to Knee Cow Wall and we hand never been there before so I lead up Elbow sheep first and then Hugo had a try but didn’t make it up. Next time we go we will head to Elbow Sheep first and see if we can both lead it.

Weather conditions: Great day, warm temperatures, no wind
A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: We all had a really good day out, started at Weka Wall on the 16 as a warm up, set up a top rope to climb on. We moved down to Speight’s Wall on a 16/17 grade route where we also set up a top rope. Went down to the Air Traffic Crontrol Wall where Hugo did a good lead on the 18, with one wicked but safe fall. I tried leading the 22 which I hadn’t seen anyone do, I fell 2 times trying to get through the crux and aventually made it to the top. I was pretty pleased to get to the top, when I did it I thought it was a 19 and it was until I got home found out it is graded at 22, unsure if it is actually a 22 though...??

A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: Only managed to do one multi pitch climb today, we ran out of energy after pushing ourselves on the previous days. We learned that it’s good to have rest days throughout a long climbing trip to ensure your energy levels are high all the time.

We learned how to escape the system, an assisted hoist, 3:1 mechanical advantage, doing a hoist using a ATC reverso/guide, and what to do when you need to lower while using a ATC reverso /guide.

The climb we did today was really enjoyable, it had a lot of different types of climbing including; slab, crack, small overhang, and delicate climbing.

A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: A good indoor climb session, practiced our technique and endurance as we are going to Australia very soon. I tried a grade 19 overhanging climb, which I managed to get up after falling down quite a few times. I learned it’s good to persevere at a climb as this increases your strength and endurance.

We used those cams and nuts to set up a equalised anchor system which we top roped on. We also practiced prusiking up the rope and doing top rope rescues.

A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: The focus for today was to do a lot of climbing. We had top ropes set up for us to climb on. Practiced our climbing and good body position on the rock. We learned how to clean all the equipment off the top of a climb to leave nothing behind when you leave the crag. Practiced a bit of lead climbing to set up top rope anchors to climb on.

Duration of the activity: Three full days
Weather conditions: Day one – Overcast, raining, moderate NE wind, light swell
Day two – Raining, strong winds at times, heavy swell with waves crashing up onto rocks
Day three – Overcast with clear spells, light SW wind, small swell
Incidents/Injuries: Small cuts and grazes on hands from rocks. When practising abseiling and locking off the ATC, a few people had trouble undoing the knot once loaded.
A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: Learned how to place different sized ‘cams’ and ‘wires’ in a safe and proper manor, and used the cams, wires and rigging rope to set up a safe anchor system. Also learned how to abseil down a rope and how to lock the ATC, and how to prusik up and down a rope safely. Overall, enjoyed using the cams, wires and rigging rope to set up a safe anchor system, and then being able to climb, abseil and prusik off the anchor.

Duration of the activity: One day indoor rock climbing
A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: Learned how to belay using a Grigri and an ATC on top rope, tying into the rope with a figure eight follow through,  the communication between the climber and the belayer, different hand/foot grips and body position when climbing. I really enjoyed doing lots of climbing and practicing the different grips and body positions to make climbing easier.



Glossary of climbing terms:

Abseil: Desend a rope by using an ATC to create friction to control the rate of descent.

Anchor: The point at the top of a climb to which the climbing system is attached to. An anchor is made up of, but not limited to, wires, cams, slings, carabiners and rigging rope.

ATC: Air Traffic Controller, a belay device that applies friction and curves to the rope to stop a fall.



Belaying: The act in which the belayer uses to stop a fall if one happens when climbing.

Cams: A piece of equipment used to be placed into a crack that uses a spring-loaded system to create opposing forces.

Grigri: A belay device that uses a clutch that self-locks once the rope is loaded.

Prusik: A knot that self tightens once loaded that is used to ascend or descend a rope.


Wires/Nuts: A piece of equipment used to be place into a crack and wedges against the rock.
