Trip Name/location: River Trip down the Arnold River, Stillwater

Group Members: Rob Bruce, Kristin Tisdall, Watson Green, Conner Livesey, Rebecca Reidie, Julia Melville, Rhys Hillock
River Flow: 75 cubic metres per second
River Grade: Grade 2
Duration of the activity: One full day on moving water
Accidents/Incidents: One member of our group forgot to bring a spray skirt, they decided to paddle down without one. As a group we made sure someone was always with them. This made our trip a bit longer then expected since we had to stop a few times for them to empty their boat.
Weather conditions: Overcast, light rain, cold
A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: The river was at a very high flow and some river features no longer existed, whereas some new features turned up at the higher flow. We worked on entering and exiting eddies and navigating down the river.

River Flow: 95 cubic metres per second
River Grade: Grade 2+
Duration of the activity: One full day on moving water
Weather conditions: Sunny, clear skies, hot
A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: This river trip was focused on group management throughout the day, making sure that everybody in the group were together and knew what was going on. Practiced using different communication signals within our group to communicate where to go on the river. We scoped out different rapids, looked at different lines to run and worked out which line was right for me.

Duration of the activity: One full day on moving water
Weather conditions: Sunny, light winds, hot
A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: Learned about different rescue methods used on the river. We practiced self rescue, towing swimmers, barging boats, deep water recscue, and tossing throw bags to swimmers in white water. I really enjoyed having a river safety focus day, learned a lot about the different types of rescue techniques.

Weather conditions: Overcast, clearing throughout the day, warm
A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: Worked on entering and exiting eddies and using different strokes to get us around the river. Practiced our rolls on both sides in the current of the river. We had a go at catching different river features such as waves and buffers, and controlling our boats on these play features.

Trip Name/location: Rolling session at Hokitika pool, flat water session at lake near Hokitika
Duration of the activity: A rolling session in the morning, a flat water session in the afternoon
Weather conditions: Overcast with sunny spells, light rain, warm
A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: Continued to work on rolling, fine tuning the motion and trying to roll on both sides. On flat water we practiced various strokes including hanging stern draw, sweep strokes, and bow draws. Paddled through the slalom course at the lake while practicing the different strokes.

Weather conditions: Overcast with sunny spells
A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: Kept working on how to enter and exit an eddy; making sure I had speed, angle and an edge. Learned how and when to use the ‘hanging stern draw’ and a ‘bow draw’ stroke. Continued to practice rolling in moving water.

Trip Name/location: Rolling session at Hokitika pool, half day river trip down the Arahura River, Hokatika

River Flow: 45 cubic metres per second
River Grade: Grade 1+
Duration of the activity: A rolling session in the morning, a white water session in the afternoon
Weather conditions: Overcast, very windy
A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: Continued to learn the sweep roll method, fine tuning the roll to make it better. On white water kept practising how to enter and exit an eddy, practiced doing rolls in the current and getting comfortable on moving water.

River Grade: Grade 1
Duration of the activity: A rolling session in the morning, a white water session in the afternoon
Weather conditions: Overcast with light rain
A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: Started to learn how to roll using the sweep roll method. Practiced the body movements: C to C motion, rotate & wrap, out & around, the finishing position. On white water learned how to enter and exit an eddy, ferry glide across the river, holding an edge and getting comfortable on moving water.

Date: 28/02/2012
Trip Name/location: Flat water at Taylorville
Duration of the activity: One full day on flat water
Weather conditions: Overcast with sunny spells, wind increasing throughout the day
A short narrative which shares your learning and highlights: Learned to be comfortable with being in a kayak, upside down under water, wet exits and T rescues. Practiced paddling in a straight line, sweep strokes and carving through the water.
